Catching Up with Our Previous Intern -LIAM HIGGINS

Since Allied Productions began in 2014, we have always sought to create a company where talented and determined visual storytellers can come to explore their creative endeavors and grow their skill sets to become more complete and well-rounded filmmakers. We aspire to foster an environment where ideas can flow freely and people’s ambitions aren’t restricted by the fear of failure but supported by the talents of the team. Over the years we have had interns from various backgrounds come in with even more varied goals and aspirations for their careers in video production. With Allied’s internship program, we aim to help the next generation of creatives get firsthand experience in the field, learn how the industry works, and gain a better understanding of how they want to fulfill their purpose.

With the Summer Internship program making its triumphant return in 2023, we wanted to reach out to one of our former interns to see what he’s doing in his career, what he learned in his time at Allied, and how that time has impacted his life to this day. Here is his story:

Liam Higgins, Allied Productions Intern 2019

My name is Liam Higgins and I had the honor of participating in the Allied internship in the summer of 2019. After graduating college with a degree in video production at Ball State University, I was still a bit unsure of which path to take in my career. Thankfully that led me to Allied Production’s door and the Allied internship.

Working alongside Dennis, Aaron, and everyone at Allied Productions, I was able to get hands on experience with photography, video production, editing, coloring, lighting, sound, as well as managing a project from pre-production through post. Allied gave me the rare opportunity to find what interested me and more importantly, showed me how I could make that passion a sustainable career. One summer working at Allied honestly taught me more about production than my four years at college. I was able to try, and at times fail, with the support that allowed me to grow.

During the internship I shadowed each department head, learning different skills. I was able to practice one-on-one with them at their studio and then put that knowledge to the test when I was fortunate enough to be brought on gigs. The crew is deeply passionate about expanding your skillset and pushing you to get better. You definitely get out of this internship whatever you put into it. Be ready to work hard, roll with the punches and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Unlike other places I’ve worked at, they won’t put you in the corner with busy work. The attention is on you, so utilize the time they give you.

Outside of work, the crew are an extremely fun, entertaining and collaborative group of individuals that were a pleasure being around. You may need to brush up on your It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia references, but if you have a passion for film and desire to grow your current skillset, I would highly recommend them.

After completing the internship, I continued working with Allied on projects, something I still happily do today every chance I can. I currently live and work in Los Angeles as a video editor. I’ve worked on commercials, TV pilots and branded content series, but I primarily work on podcasts including: Showtime’s All The Smoke, Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin’, and New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce. Working with Allied helped round out my creative tool belt and I have been able to successfully step in as a videographer, sound recorder and producer when needed. I attribute my success in these roles to the handwork and skills I learned during my time with Allied Productions.

From seasonal intern to frequent collaborator, Liam’s passion and dedication has led to work with Allied Productions that has literally taken him across the globe. This is a picture from our project that filmed in Brazil in early 2022.
